Human Rights in Afghanistan

Research Task for Mrs. Barger's Classes: How do the challenges facing Afghanistan affect human rights within the country?

To begin, it might help to understand a bit of the history of Afghanistan to see what challenges have faced the country. There is a brief chronology on BBC News that is enlightening. You may want to also refresh yourself on what constitutes "basic human rights" because we sometimes take them for granted. Here is how the United Nations defines human rights in "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights."

While you read through, think about basic human rights that are potentially being violated during the historical events that have occurred in Afghanistan. For example, are the rights of women being affected because of the implementation of sharia law in Afghanistan? If so, how?

Searches for this project seem to be more successful when a combination of keywords are used. Consider using an advanced search and entering Afghanistan + (another term). For example, "human rights," "women's rights," Taliban, education, safety, government, sharia, Hazaras, and Pashtuns would make good secondary search terms.

In addition to the databases suggested below, given your specific topic, you might want to try the Student Research Center (EBSCO), and/or Opposing Viewpoints (Gale).
