Happy Death Day

11/1/2017

Alone in the house, I looked out the window and saw the yard I would never see again, for I knew what was going to happen that day. I knew I was going to die. Wait. You don’t know the backstory. Let me explain it to you. The year is 3047, and the United States has in its power the most powerful technology of all. We have created a chip that when inserted into your brain, reads all of your statistics and tells you when every major event, including marriage and death, will happen. You will not know any of the people involved, where it will happen, and why it will happen. All you know is it will happen. There are no flaws, no mistakes. Only the truth. I finally got my chip inserted two weeks ago. I have known for two weeks now that I was going to die today. “Make sure you take everything in,” my mother told me, as she also knew that today was the day I die. And so I have. Today, I sit, waiting and waiting for my fate. Noon passed, and then 1 o’clock. I still sit patiently, knowing I will die. My mom asks me, “Do you want anything special for your final day? Anything at all?” I responded, “Sure! I’ll have Dad come home!” excitedly believing she could truly bring him back home, even though he had left me when I was only 3 years old. She went to the car and drove off to find my father, the only thing I had ever wanted since he left us 11 years ago. When she came back, Dad was with her! I couldn’t believe it! He was actually here! But wait. Why was he acting that way? “Dad,” I asked, “what are you doing?” He still walked towards me with that unnerving smile, holding something that looked like a gun. “Dad?”
